Make Your Own Pet Treats

Whether your dog mastered the art of rolling over or your feline friend has been especially sweet, treats are an excellent way for pet owners to show a little love and appreciation. And since making your own pet food is becoming increasingly popular, we thought why stop there? Check out these pet-friendly treat recipes that are just as healthy and inexpensive to make.

As always, consult with your vet before making any dietary changes to your furry loved one! And remember, these homemade treats are made with fresh ingredients, so store all leftovers in the fridge or freezer.

Doggie Vegetarian Treat

  • 1 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 16 ounces plain yogurt
Instructions: Mix the peanut butter, honey, and fruit together until well blended (mash with a fork or use the blender). Add the fruit mixture to the yogurt and mix well. Freeze in ice cube trays. Crack trays and release treats as needed. Perfect for hot days!

Doggie Meatballs

  • 1 pound ground turkey or other meat
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley
  • ¼ cup shredded cheese
  • ½ cup chopped veggies
Instructions: Mix all the ingredients together and shape into meatballs. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until browned. Let cool and serve.

Cat Crackers

  • 6 ounces of undrained tuna
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/3 cup water
Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Measure all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly with your hands. Roll out to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into treat sized pieces. Place on a greased cookie sheet. Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden.

Cheese Yums

  • ¾ cup shredded or grated cheddar cheese
  • ¾ cup whole wheat flour
  • ¼ cup sour cream or yogurt (plain)
  • ¼ cup cornmeal
  • 5 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese
Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all the ingredients into a dough mixture (add a touch of water if needed). Knead the dough into a ball and then roll it out to ¼ inch. Cut into one-inch pieces and bake for 25 minutes on a greased cookie sheet.
